A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment was composed by the great master Atiśa Dīpaṃkara Śrījñāna, as a response to the scholars of Nalanda University beseeching him to return from Tibet, as he was meant to, within three years time but was unable to do so due to the unavoidable circumstance of war in Nepal. This pioneering text comprises the root of the whole genre of Lamrim practice, which came to form the core of Buddhist practice for all traditions in Tibet.
